Twitter Wars: Ashton Kutcher beats CNN

Ashton Kutcher has become the first Twitter user to reach more than one million ‘followers’.

‘@aplusk’ hit the one million mark early Friday morning with ‘@cnnbrk’ following suit half an hour later.

The 31-year-old actor challenged CNN and its founder, Ted Turner to the race and had promised to “ding-dong-ditch” (ring doorbell, run away) the billionaire’s house if he beat the news network.

A live web stream broadcast the Punk’d star celebrating his win with wife Demi Moore and friends, as his account topped the mark with the US network following suit shortly after.

“Victory is ours!” he later twittered.

“I think it’s a huge statement about social media for one person to actually have the ability to broadcast to as many people as a major media network.

“We have shown the world that the new wave is here, it is present and it is ready to explode.

“We can and will create our media. We can and will edit our media. We can and will broadcast our media. We will censor our own media ourselves.

As part of the bet, Kutcher and CNN vowed to donate 10,000 mosquito nets to charity for World Malaria Day if they won and 1,000 if they lost.

What does it say when our society is more interested in the mundane day-to-day activities of an actor than current world-affairs?

More astonishingly, Ashton has one million fans!? Go figure.
