Dad cleared in Slumdog Millionaire star sale

Rubiana Ali and father

The father of Slumdog Millionaire child actor Rubiana Ali has been cleared by Indian officials of allegations he tried to broker the sale of his famous daughter in exchange for £200,000.

Rafiq Qureshi was accused by the News of the World of attempting to profit off his 9-year-old daughter, who plays a young Latika in the film, after the paper set up a sting operation and had a reporter pose as potential buyer masquerading as Arab royalty.

Nisar Tamboli, a senior Mumbai police officer said: “So far there is no evidence of any offense, hence there is no registration of complaint and no arrest.”

Qureshi has always proclaimed his innocence, claiming that the tabloid “tried to frame” him and had “played dirty.”

Slumdog Millionaire star put up for sale by dad

Rubiana Ali

According to the News of the World, the father of 9-year-old Rubiana Ali, who played the young Latika in the film, attempted to sell his daughter into illegal adoption for millions of rupees (about £200,000).

Rubiana’s father Rafiq Qureshi feels slighted by the filmmakers – despite the film doing so well and his daughter becoming so famous his family are still living in such rough conditions.

“We’ve got nothing out of [Slumdog Millionaire].” claims Qureshi. “They gave some money at the start, but they gave nothing afterwards. They gave us around 150,000 rupees [£2,800].

“We live in one room — seven of us sleep on the floor,” Rafiq reportedly said. “I earn £2 to £3 a day. I have to consider what’s best for me, my family and Rubiana’s future.”

This is not the first time that the young “Slumdog” cast has been swept up in controversy. In January, several of the actors’ parents spoke out to protest their lack of financial remuneration from a film that has grossed over $327 million at the international box office.

Director Danny Boyle & Co. donated $750,000 to a Mumbai children’s charity on top of an additional $750,000 for the education and hosing of both Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, the youngest Salim.

Police in Mumbai are now investigating the allegations of which Qureshi is denying.
